Spirit Thread Wilderness Survival Skills and Applied Learning, LLC.

In each person, there is a natural mechanism for understanding based on experience. The premise of classes offered at Spirit Thread Wilderness Survival Skills and Applied Learning, LLC., is to incorporate experience into education, whether that be crafting, fine art, writing, physical exercise, or exploration of wilderness survival techniques.  To allow for a series of immersions into the different situations in which one might find his or her self, for the sake of survival and development, experience is gained in workshop education with other students and instructors.

This dynamic approach allows for a student to bring their acquired skills into partially controlled real life wilderness scenarios; to safely complete the understanding in the appropriate environment. This thread of knowledge and experience with the natural world should never disappear.  It connects like an umbilical cord to the life that is present in all things.  Take the time to better grasp what that can mean for you, and how that can be a positive aspect even in our suburban lives.  Simply breathing and sitting in a natural environment might be just what you have needed for a long time.  To relax and learn in a wilderness environment might replenish for you what it means to be human, and can change your life.  Immerse yourself in the bosom of what nature can provide.  Spirit Thread Wilderness Survival Skills and Applied Learning, LLC. will guide you. Our classes connect students and teachers as they solve problems and solidify their survival skills in camp.

Spirit Thread Educational Programs:

-Continuous Class is the main meet up class on a regular basis for all new and returning students.  This is where the bulk of practice and experience with the technical and mechanical side of the skills offered are gained.  Before any ideas for an immersion class are formed, one must show and possess a basis of solidarity in knife skill and safety, basic camp setup and take down, back packing etiquette, trail etiquette, familiarity with Arizona wildlife and their behaviors, knowledge and familiarity with local plant life, map reading and navigation skills, and various other points of important information regarding energy consumption, decision making, and wild terrain.  These are all skills that can be gained and practiced when attending "Continuous Class" while still within the confines of our suburban environment.  Depending on emphasized topics or directions of instruction, "Continuous Class" will be held at least once a week, at an announced time and location for all who join.  See the contact page for info.

The cost of class camping trips will vary in price due to materials or topic, but a set cost of $100 per person will be collected as payment.

-Procedural camping trips will be to practice organizing travel and hiking into a location and setting up a base camp; as a prerequisite to any further wilderness immersion or graduations.  These are for students with little or no wilderness immersion experience to spend some time becoming more familiar with what it means to be camping in the woods or desert.  For those looking to personalize and employ an immersion trip for graduation, they will need to show proficiency of skill in camp basics before making a plan.  Aspects contributing to the costs of these trips will be any or all of the following: food, transportation, permits, duration and level of instruction.  One can expect a total contribution of at least $100 per person.

-Topic-specific classes will be rooted in experiences gained in "Continuous Class" as a group.  These topic-specific classes are for certain lessons that can require a specific natural setting.  Like shelter building, water location, hunting or trapping techniques, food foraging...etc.  These topic specific locations will be planned accordingly and will potentially include additional fees due to the extensiveness of travel, accommodations etc.

-Immersion and graduation trips are for students with gained experience.  These trips are for those whom have climbed the ladder from skills in "Continuous Class" through the procedural trips and have developed a skill they wish to explore in the nature of wilderness, in relative solitude.  No student below the age of 18 may embark on an immersion trip, and will need to show seriousness in attitude as well as intention to learn the specific skills chosen to explore.  Specific areas will be chosen that are familiar, with important information about local wildlife, plant life, and resources; both dangers and other aspects relevant to particular immersion plans that are thoroughly understood and studied beforehand. The student or students will be accompanied, allowing for them to navigate to a location of their choice to experience their immersion, within a boundary set from a base camp. Chaperones are always welcome and encouraged to join the excursion.  These trips will have more individualized instruction and are considered to be advanced  level trips.  Different immersion classes that are successful for the individual students based on their own direction of their skills will be considered a "graduation" and a noted accomplishment with a commemorative gift stating the accomplishment.  Students may continue to "graduate" within various types of immersion scenarios, until they are practically calling the wilderness home!

"A sharp knife is a safe knife" is what they say.  Mora brand knives are available for group use when needed.  A serious student should have their own, fixed blade knife that is kept clean and familiar.

This bow-drill friction fire kit was assembled out of materials gathered from my surroundings on a solo immersion camping trip.

Mid-class, we are discussing the preferred method for winding natural fibers into cordage rope.
